DURANT Ivan

Painter, photographer, performance artist resides Blairgowrie

Early works painted in semi-primitive style, his pictures of pigeons, cattle and domestic animals reflected his interest in farm life and the animals which are its produce.  Later to demonstrate his concern for their fate, he began a continuing series of public performances and films.  His SHOT COW, SEVERED HAND, PIGEON DINNER, and other performances attracted wide publicity and some caused police intervention, especially the occasion on which he dumped a dead coiw on the steps of the NGV as both an animal rights and artistic statement.  Ensuing works show that his concerns remain the same while his means of expression become more conventional in form.  He held more than 40 solo shows 1970-2006.  Awards include Caulfield Art Centre acquisition, 1976; Maude Vizard-Wholohan prize, Adel, 1977, ACA wrist in residence New York, VAB Grant 1978, Sulman Prize, AGNSW 2009.  He is represented in the NGA, AGSA, NGV; regional galleries including Benalla, Latrobe Valley, Geelong; Caulfield Arts Centre.

Has exhibited for over 40 years and represented in NGA, NGSA and NGV collections
