Motor Works is Melbourne Grammar School's self-contained Creative Arts centre. Motor Works contains spacious drawing studios, an eleven-person darkroom, a large gallery as well as printmaking, woodworking, ceramics and computer graphics equipment.

The Creative Arts Department provides rich experiences for students from Years 9 to 12. In Years 9 and 10, students can choose electives (Media, Photography and Visual Communication and Design) as well as the core Art subjects which include Two and Three-Dimensional Studies and Art History. Students who do VCE Art can choose from four subjects: Art, Studio Arts, Visual Communication and Design and Media Studies.
Ms Cat Poljski MFA, DipFA, DipEd
Cat Poljski is the current Head of Faculty at MGS and completed her MFA in Fine Arts at Monash University. She exhibits regularly both nationally and internationally and
has been on residencies in Beijing, New York and Munich. She runs a studio with ten other artists in East Brunswick and has been a practicing artist since she completed
her undergraduate. She was recently involved in a project that involved navigating Melbourne titled, 37°48’S Artists Navigate Melbourne, which was exhibited at the 2014 New York Print Fair, the Sofitel in Melbourne and is now travelling to São Paulo in Brazil. She loves what she does and will continue to make art.
Mr James Bourne BA (Hons), PGCE
James has been a teacher at MGS for 10 years. His background has been in furniture design industry ‘Varah Furniture’ in the UK. James has used his talents to inspire our students at VCE level. His mission is to promote and develop student work at top level within the scope of Product Design Technology (PDT). This includes architecture, industrial design and engineering fields. He is currently working with a team to encourage and implement cross curricular collaboration
Mr Mark Brady B.Ed, B.Performance
Mark has worked as an actor and director, in theatre, film and television. Some of
his theatre credits include King Lear, Macbeth, The Snow Queen, for Sydney Theatre Company, Henry 5, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet for The Bell Shakespeare Company and the world premiere of Midnite for Oz Opera. His television work includes Home and Away, All Saints, Rush, Water Rats, Comedy Inc, Roy and Hg’s The Dump, Video Dare, The Surgeon, Chandon Pictures and Deadline Gallipoli and film includes, Nim’s Island, Twinkle Twinkle, The Legend of Drunken Master, Talented and Around the Block.
Ms Claire Garnham BEd (Hons), BTechOnd
Claire Garnham has been a teacher of Design Technology for over 20 years. She is skilled in three disciplines, with a main focus on industrial design and furniture. Claire has worked as a graphic designer in industry before teaching. She has had several commissions from private clients and her work is highly regarded in the industry. Currently in the DT department, laser cutting and 3D printing practices are being implemented to lead our students in to the future.
Ms Kate Hendry BA, BFA, DipTeach
Kate Hendry is a sculptor. She studied Fine Arts in Sculpture and has been a practicing artist since completing her undergraduate studies at the ANU and VCA. Kate thoroughly enjoys the tactility of sculpture and regularly exhibits her artworks which bridge the space between drawing and sculpture. She likes to make stuff. Sometimes she makes big stuff. Sometimes it is small. If you like to make stuff, or would like to see her make stuff... the Sculpture/3D studio is the place for you!
￼Ms Helen Kennedy MFA, BFA, DipEd
Helen Kennedy is currently teaching Art at MGS and has previously taught at RMIT, Deakin University and the National Art School in Sydney where she completed her Masters in Painting. She has been exhibiting regularly in Australia, France, Germany
and Korea and has had residencies in Paris and New York. Her work has been commissioned for both private and corporate collections including The Four Seasons Hotel and Crown Casino. She is represented in private and public collections both internationally and in Australia, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia.

The arts@mgs and FOG are proud to support the VCE Art, Studio Arts, Visual Communication Design, Design Technology & Media Exhibition students with four prizes awarded annually for outstanding achievement. The awards are announced at the VCE Art Exhibition at the Motor Works Gallery.
